CONCLUDING
and this is my final paper !
It is a common
knowledge that Indonesians believe reading is just an activity to find source
of information from any kind of media, such as newspaper. Some people think
that reading newspaper is an unimportant thing to do, because it is boring and
a useless thing to do. This point of view has also have by many Indonesian
teenagers. The teenagers believe reading newspaper is uninteresting to do,
because there is no visualization as they`ve seen on television. Instead of
reading newspaper, teenagers prefer doing other activities using advanced
technology such as playing games online, updating their status, chatting with
their friends or reading their friends status in social networking. Teenagers
do those things to amuse themselves, although those activities waste their
time. And because of the addiction to the social networking, teenagers failed
to realize that reading newspaper is one of the media to sharpen their
concentration, to accelerate reading speed and to get moral value.
First, reading newspaper can make
teenagers concentrate on things more. As we all know, there are so many
headline news and articles written on the newspaper. When they read the
headline news, they must concentrate on the passages to get the main idea from
the article and to understand the whole articles. Not only get the main idea,
but also teenagers can minimize their mistakes when doing their task or
assignment that needs high concentration. It also avoids teenagers from doing
their task or assignment all over again. For example, when they do physics or
math exam, they must understand the question and then calculate it. Imagine
they must focus in doing the exam with 40 problems and they have to finish it
in only 120 minutes. It is not an easy thing to do. If they don’t practice their
concentration every day, it will make them feel impossible to do the exam. And
if they don’t make themselves use to reading newspaper, they will need more
time to concentrate in doing other things, even their daily activities. So,
reading newspaper help teenagers to concentrate and to get the best result for
their work.
The
second benefit from reading newspaper is to accelerate teenagers reading speed.
Teenagers that read newspaper regularly will have the ability to read a passage
faster than the teenagers that do not exercise their reading skill. Skimming is one of the reading techniques
that used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When teenagers read the
newspaper, they're probably not reading it word-by-word. Teenagers often skim
when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time, because skimming
is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. On the other
hand if you want to find specific information quickly, you
can use scanning, because in scanning you have a question in your mind and you
read a passage only to find the answer and ignoring unrelated information. It
is very useful if the teenagers have skimming and scanning skills at the same time,
because those skills can speed up their reading time. And accelerating reading
speed which can be practiced by reading newspaper everyday,
will be very useful for them in doing their reading tests.
Last
but not least, teenagers will learn moral values by reading newspaper.
Since newspaper nowadays not only print about the latest news but also stories
about successful people, they can learn about perseverance and determination
from other people’s success stories, for example the article about Ahmad Fuadi, a successful Indonesian
man. He came from a small village in West Sumatra and studied in an Islamic
boarding school in East Java. He faced a challenge which was every student in
the school was not allowed to use Indonesian language. Students were required
to use English or Arabian language around the boarding school. Not only that
challenge, he also had limited time to rest and bad condition in the place he
studied. Those things were not a problem for Fuadi. He always studied hard and remembered
the magic words “man jadda wa jadda” which means that success always
follows anyone who wholeheartedly does something. He was a VOA journalist and later
on he became a famous Indonesian author. One of his famous novels is
Negeri 5 Menara which was filmed by Affandi and was played in several countries. From this story teenagers learn about
determination and perseverance which can be applied in their life to help them
reach their goal.
In conclusion, reading
newspaper is important for teenagers to sharpen their concentration, to accelerate reading speed and to get
moral values. To make sure the Indonesian teenagers like reading, we must continue
our program that called teenagers reading movement that have a purpose to make
Indonesian young generation become good readers.
maybe it can help you ! good luck !
